The TAFE Community Alliance was launched on Friday 22 February at Western Sydney Community Forum. The Alliance is coming together to make sure TAFE services across NSW continue to provide vocational education and training, and second chance education, to all people across NSW.

The Prime Minister gave the fifth annual Closing the Gap Report on Tuesday the 6th of February. UnitingCare Children Young People and Families (UCCYPF) was very proud to have our Aboriginal Business Unit, Jaanimili, featured in the report. The report highlighted the success Jaanimili has had in improving employment outcomes for Aboriginal people at UCCYPF. Over the five years since Jaanimili’s inception, the organization has moved from employing nine Aboriginal staff to employing 84 (of roughly one thousand).

The changes to the Parenting Payment (single) will push more families deeper into poverty. At a time when jobs in disadvantaged communities are hard to come by we need more investment in assisting these families, rather than punitive measures that will further disadvantage families.

A new ACOSS report released yesterday presents detailed analysis of the disturbing depth and scope of poverty in Australia. Over two million Australians live below the poverty line, with one in six children living in poverty. This has a significant impact on children and young people.
